Who We Are

Small Bullet
Jan McMahan, Co-Director:
I was so excited when I got my first computer and signed up for Internet service in 1996. I felt like the world was opening up in front of my eyes. I was in such awe. So many places to visit and so little time to do it.

Never having been the victim of any type of abuse, either as a child or an adult, I was astonished at the number of sites I came across that dealt with adults striving to overcome the sexual, physical and emotional abuse they suffered as children. Reading the newspaper, watching the TV news and seeing how often this happens to children made me realize that something needed to be done. I vowed I would do everything in my power to get the word out about this atrocity. I created a web site dealing with pedophilia. I wrote letters to politicians asking them to support bills that would protect children from these predators. I wrote to law enforcement reporting any sites I stumbled on that exploited children. The process has been slow but seeing the sites go down and the perpetrators jailed has been very satisfying. If I've saved just one child from being abused then I feel my work has been successful. The fight won't end until children are no longer abused.    Small Bullet Continue Small Bullet

Mary McLaughlin, H.S.C. (Human Service Counsellor), Abuse Prevention/Awareness Advisor:
As an adult survivor of incest, I have long been interested in victims' rights. Through personal experience and in talking to other survivors, I have learned that even after the sexual abuse has ended, most victims remain just that, victims. The damage that is done to children remains with them throughout their lifetime. When a pedophile preys on a child, he or she not only takes their innocence, but also takes their self worth and leaves them devasted in mind and body.

I was one of the fortunate ones in that I was able, through therapy and the support of family and friends, to overcome much of the trauma connected with being an incest victim. I went to college to learn how to work with other survivors of child abuse and that has become one of my main focuses in life. I want the pedophiles to recognize exactly the damage that they do and to get them off the streets so that no child needs to go through what I have. It shouldn't hurt to be a kid.    Small Bullet Continue Small Bullet

Pam Ricks, Law Enforcement Consultant & Technical Advisor
: Nineteen years as a police officer has shown me every reason in the world to want to protect children from those who "love them." My law enforcement career started in 1983 as a dispatcher where I heard the calls for help. Then in 1985 I attended the academy and went on the road as a police officer where I responded to the calls for help. Every case involving a child stands out in my memory and refuses to allow me to give up the fight. Every case haunts me and every child speaks to me. I became involved with the Internet a few years ago and I realized that the Internet is a new "neighborhood" that needs to be watched. It needs to be patrolled as constantly and as relentlessly as the street you live on. Our children are in this "new neighborhood" and I will do my best to see that they are kept safe there.    Small Bullet Continue Small Bullet
