Dear Family Circle and Ms. Susan Ungaro,

In your April 3, 2001 issue, you ran a special report by Jan Goodwin on page 44. One of the subjects interviewed for that article was Debbie Mahoney of SOC-UM, Safeguarding Our Children-United Mothers.

When Ms. Mahoney discovered her son was being sexually molested by NAMBLA member Jonathan Tampico, she said, and I quote, "I was disgusted, listening to him try to justify what he'd done."

When Tampico was arrested, he was found to be in possession of a very large library of [child] pornography.

Because of Ms. Mahoney's stance regarding this issue, I find it ironic that she may have failed to mention to the Family Circle staff, her association with adult pornographers and the charity auction that took place on behalf of the SOC-UM organization on September 23, 2000 in New Orleans.

"....adult Webmasters staged a charity auction that raised more than $45,000 for the children’s advocacy group Soc-um.org.... But even as the Webmasters were being applauded for their philanthropy, several women dressed as young schoolgirls were roaming the convention floor, handing out brochures and posing for photos with plaid skirts hiked up and hands on one another’s breasts and buttocks. Other ads for 'teen content' could be found...."

Cyberporn’s internal struggle
By Mike Brunker (MSNBC)
NEW ORLEANS, September 24, 2000

"....Some prominent adult Web industry types managed to move in and out for the dinner, though, including Cybererotica’s Ron Levi, Rich Botto of RJB Telcom, D-Money, and Debbie Mahoney of SOC-UM, the child porn fighters for whom the auction was held. '(She) spoke and got a huge round of applause,' Heather says. 'This was her first major fundraiser and she was quite overwhelmed. I think a lot of good things are going to come out of this.' Including, Heather said, an estimated take of between $45,000-50,000 at this writing...."

Is this the message Family Circle wants to pass on to their readers regarding the safety of our children? The message I'm getting is that Ms. Mahoney is willing to overlook the safety of children if she is the one who will benefit financially from pornographers. How does that make her any better than the man who molested her son?

"Ted Bundy's execution 10 years ago for the sex slaying of 12-year-old Kimberly Leach came only 17 hours after he told a psychologist that unless society deals with the issue of pornography that depicts violence, 'there are lots of kids . . . who are going to be dead tomorrow' . . . he said the violence-laced pornography he began looking at in his pre-teen years induced some of his actions. He warned that other homicides will happen 'because other young people are reading the kinds of things and seeing the kinds of things that are available in the media today.'"
